The Blackwood Hotel
The Blackwood Hotel, established in 1868, is Victoria’s oldest continuously licensed weatherboard hotel, which now, thanks to a recent renovation, seamlessly blends modern comfort with the charm of its rich history.
The owners wanted to keep some of the rich history of the towns watering hole, but give it a new sense of purpose and life, as it had become old and tired over the years.
The ‘Haven in the Hills’ concept and tagline was drawn from the title of the beautiful old poem hanging on the pub wall by an old time local lady Grace Rayner, who used to frequent the pub and play the old piano. It felt right to bring some of the past into the future and we felt it summed up the pub really well as it really is a secret hidden gem in the forest – if you know, you know… and if you don’t, you should!
The ‘key icon’ that uses the monogram initials of the pub ‘B.H’ has been designed to symbolise this ‘hidden historic hotel’ concept; the secret nature of the location of the pub. Once you’ve found the pub, you are privy to it’s unique location, amongst the trees and forests of Blackwood, home to an 150 Oak tree – almost becoming part of a ‘Golden guild’, a social club that is a little bit secret, where you will always be drawn back to… the charm of the ‘watering hole’ amongst the trees. The custom hand-crafted typography of the logo is inspired by the old character-filled fonts that were once featured in the old photos and newspaper clippings on the walls of the old hotel from the past. The Black and Gold colours of the logo were chosen for the obvious link back to Blackwood’s gold mining history, the pub’s address in Golden Point Rd., and the ‘Black’ in Blackwood. There’s even a few specks of gold in the logos, an ode to the treasure in the pans of the minors of old.
